Autopsy Pricing

When a family member passes away unexpectedly, it is a natural response to want answers. Our services provide closure by addressing the questions surrounding the loss of your loved one.

A pet autopsy is a post-mortem examination of a pet angel to investigate underlying conditions that may have contributed to their passing. This procedure not only provides sought-after answers but can also bring clarity and peace to those grieving. Throughout the autopsy and cremation process, every angel is treated with the dignity and respect befitting a cherished family member.

What are common reasons to pursue an autopsy?
In some cases, the cause of a pet’s clinical decline or death is not straightforward. An autopsy can assist in determining causes such as infections, congenital anomalies, cancer, or physiological abnormalities.

How soon must the procedure occur?
Ideally, the procedure should be performed within 24 hours of passing. Keeping your angel refrigerated (but not frozen) can help prolong the window of viability for the procedure.

Who performs the autopsy?
Every autopsy is performed by a board-certified veterinary anatomic pathologist. Our pathologists are veterinarians with specialized training in animal disease, certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP).

How long does the process take?
The initial (gross) examination is performed within 24 hours of arrival. You will receive preliminary findings via a report or phone call within 48 hours. During the procedure, small samples are taken for microscopic evaluation to determine the precise cause of death. Please allow a minimum of 2–3 weeks for the final report. If the case requires ancillary testing (such as bacterial cultures or PCR panels), the turnaround may be extended by several days. However, we will be in contact throughout the process to keep you informed of the progress.

Does the cost include testing?
Yes, most testing is included. Additional costs apply only to specialized toxin or multi-disease PCR panels, which are rarely needed.

Can my pet be cremated afterward?
Yes. Cremation is expertly facilitated by the caring team at Pet Passages. All memorial selections will be honored to ensure you receive your cherished keepsakes.
